This famous ten-chapter essay, long in the public domain, has fannish roots and seems fair game for the TAFF library. It first appeared in the proto-fanzine The Recluse #1 (1927) edited by W. Paul Cook and was reissued in revised serial form in the early fanzine The Fantasy Fan (from #2, October 1933, to #18, February 1935) edited by Charles Hornig; this ceased publication partway through Lovecraft’s Chapter VIII. Full revised text in the Lovecraft collection The Outsider and Others (Arkham House, 1939).
